How To Enable The Secret Dark Mode On iPhone In iOS 11

If you have already updated your device to the latest beta seed of the next iOS major release then you can enable the secret dark mode on iPhone in iOS 11. What is strange is that Apple hasn't named this feature as “Dark Mode.” Instead, it has been termed as “Smart Invert.” If you have used iOS for long, you must be aware of “Invert Colors”—that simply reverses the colors of the display.

Thanks to this enhancement, you can now use this feature as a makeshift dark mode. It works great in stock apps like Phone, Messages, App Store, Settings and more.

If you want to try to enable the secret dark mode on iPhone in iOS 11 then follow easy steps below.

How to Enable Smart Invert Colors Feature On iPhone In iOS 11

Step 1: Launch the Settings app on your iOS 11 device and head over to General -> Accessibility.

Step 2: From there, click on Display Accommodations.

Step 3: Pick Invert Colors option.

Step 4: On the next screen you'll be presented with two options:

  • Smart Invert: Once it's activated, it reverses the colors of the display except for media, images. It also works with the apps that support dark color styles.
  • Classic Invert: It lets you to simply reverse colors of the display.

Click on the toggle next to Smart Invert.

That's it! You have successfully enabled dark mode on your iOS device. As you've noticed the background became black and the text was white.

How to Add Smart Invert Shortcuts

As this is an accessibility feature, it is possible to quickly get to it as a shortcut by triple clicking the home button or using the new Accessibility Shortcuts control in the new customizable Control Center.

First, you’ll need to add this as an Accessibility shortcut.

Step 1: Go to Settings app, head over to General -> Accessibility.

Step 2: Select Accessibility Shortcut.

Step 3: On the next screen, click on Smart Invert Colors.

Now, when you triple click the Home button, you’ll see the Smart Invert option right there.

Introduced on June 5, 2017 at the Worldwide Developers Conference, iOS 11 is the next-generation version of iOS. iOS 11 brings subtle design changes to interface elements throughout the mobile operating system. Text is bolder, apps like Phone  and Calculator have a new look, the Lock screen and Control Center have been entirely redesigned and improved.
